A private training studio in San Diego gives you a coach, a quiet room and equipment that is ready when you are. A big-box gym gives you lots of machines at a low monthly price, but you coach yourself. So if you want guidance, privacy and steady results, a private studio is usually the better choice.
I’m Chris Keith, and I’ve spent over 30 years of personal training in San Diego, in gyms and in my own private studio. Here is an honest look at both options.

What is a private training studio in San Diego?
A private studio is a space built for one-on-one coaching, not for walk-in members. In other words, there are no crowds, no class schedule and no waiting for a squat rack. You book a time, and the trainer and the equipment are there for you.
My own studio is a private space of about 6,000 square feet at 5260 Riley St in Bay Park / Morena. Every session is one hour, 1-on-1, by appointment only. As a result, the hour is built around you, from the warm-up to the last set.
How does a big-box gym compare?
Big-box gyms have real strengths. For example, they are open long hours, they have rows of cardio machines, and the monthly fee is low. Also, many have pools, saunas and group classes.
However, the trade-offs show up once you walk in:
- Crowds: peak hours mean waiting for benches, racks and cables.
- Noise and distraction: loud music, TVs and phones make it hard to focus.
- Little coaching: most members train alone, so form and planning are up to you.
- Feeling watched: beginners and people coming back from a break often feel self-conscious on a busy floor.
- Training sold separately: personal training at a gym is usually an extra cost, and trainers may change often.
In short, a gym gives you access. A studio gives you coaching.
Private studio vs. big-box gym: side-by-side
| Factor | Private studio | Big-box gym |
|---|---|---|
| Coaching | Every minute, 1-on-1 | Mostly on your own |
| Privacy | No crowds or audience | Open floor, busy at peak times |
| Equipment | Ready when you arrive | Shared, often a wait |
| Program | Written for your body and goals | Up to you |
| Cost | Higher per hour | Low monthly fee |
| Best for | Results, safety, accountability | Self-directed, experienced lifters |
Why choose a private training studio in San Diego?
The biggest reason is coaching. Mayo Clinic notes that proper form and technique matter in strength training, and that working with a trainer helps beginners learn correct form (Mayo Clinic). That’s hard to get from a mirror on a crowded gym floor.
Next comes consistency. Because you have a set time with a coach, you show up. Then each session builds on the last one, so your plan moves forward instead of starting over every week. That’s the core of The Chris Keith Method.
Finally, there is comfort. Many people avoid gyms because they feel out of place on a crowded floor. In a private room, that worry goes away, and you can focus on the work.

Who does better at a big-box gym?
A gym can be the right call for some people. For instance, an experienced lifter with a solid program, good form and no injuries may only need equipment. Similarly, someone who mainly wants cardio machines, a pool or classes may get more value from a membership.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to pick just one. Some clients train with me two days a week and walk or ride around Mission Bay on other days. That mix covers the CDC’s advice of 150 minutes of moderate activity plus at least two days of muscle-strengthening work each week (CDC).
What does a private training studio in San Diego cost?
Private training costs more per hour than a gym membership, because you are paying for an expert’s full attention. At my studio, 1-hour private sessions run $125 to $275 depending on package size, and the first consultation is free. Larger packages lower the price per session. See the current rates and specials for details.
So the real question is value. If a cheap membership goes unused, it costs more than it looks. On the other hand, coached sessions you actually attend can pay off in strength, confidence and fewer setbacks. For a deeper breakdown, read how much a personal trainer costs in San Diego.
How do you pick the right studio?
Not every studio is the same. Before you sign up, ask a few simple questions:
- Is every session truly 1-on-1, or do you share the trainer?
- Who will coach you, and how long have they trained clients?
- Does the trainer hold a recognized certification, such as NASM?
- Will they assess your movement and history before the first workout?
- Is the location easy to reach from where you live or work?

Where is the studio, and who trains there?
My studio sits at 5260 Riley St in Bay Park / Morena, just off I-5. Because of that location, it’s a short drive for many San Diegans. For example, clients come from Pacific Beach, Clairemont, Point Loma, Mission Valley, Linda Vista and Old Town. All sessions take place at the studio.
I’m NASM certified, and I was voted Best Personal Trainer by San Diego Magazine. You can read more about my background or browse the personal training FAQ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a private training studio better than a big-box gym?
It depends on your goals. For example, if you want expert coaching, a quiet space and no waiting for equipment, a private studio is usually the better fit. However, if you train well on your own and mainly need access to machines, a big-box gym can work. Many people use both: a studio for coached sessions and a gym or park for extra workouts.
How much does a private training studio in San Diego cost?
Private 1-on-1 sessions cost more than a gym membership because you get a coach for the full hour. At Chris Keith Personal Training, sessions run $125 to $275 per hour depending on package size, and the first consultation is free. Check the current rates page for packages and specials, because prices can change.
Do I need to be fit before training at a private studio?
No. In fact, many clients start at a private studio because they feel out of place at a busy gym. A good trainer starts where you are, checks your movement, and builds a plan around your history and goals. Also, if you have an injury or health condition, check with your doctor before starting a new program.
Where is Chris Keith’s private training studio?
The studio is at 5260 Riley St, San Diego, CA 92110, in Bay Park / Morena. It sits just off I-5 and close to Mission Bay, so clients drive in from Pacific Beach, Clairemont, Point Loma, Mission Valley and beyond. All sessions are private, 1-on-1 and by appointment at the studio.
How often should I train at a private studio?
Most people do well with two or three coached sessions a week. That lines up with the CDC advice to do muscle-strengthening work at least two days a week. In addition, walking, cycling or swimming on other days helps you reach the 150 weekly minutes of moderate activity the CDC recommends.
