Healthy turkey burger recipe card: feta basil turkey burgers with ingredients and instructions

Looking to treat Dad this Father’s Day, or just want a better burger night? These feta basil turkey burgers are one of my go-to meals. They’re lean, high in protein and full of flavor, with a Mediterranean twist that sets them apart from a traditional beef burger. After more than 30 years as a personal trainer in San Diego, I can tell you that meals like this are how clients eat well without feeling like they’re on a diet.

Healthy turkey burger recipe: ingredients

Makes 4 burgers.

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey (93% lean works well)
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese crumbles
  • 2 Tbsp packed chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg (optional, to help bind)
  • 4 brioche buns, or large lettuce leaves for a low-carb option
  • Toppings like red onion, lettuce and tomato

How to make feta basil turkey burgers

  1. Mix gently. In a bowl, combine the turkey, feta, basil, Worcestershire, salt, pepper and egg (if using). Use your fingertips to distribute everything evenly, but don’t overwork the meat, or the burgers will turn out dense.
  2. Form 4 patties. Make them about 3/4 inch thick, and press a small dimple in the center of each so they cook evenly.
  3. Grill. Cook over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side, until cooked all the way through. Ground turkey should reach 165°F on an instant-read thermometer, according to the USDA safe minimum temperature chart.
  4. Build and enjoy. Toast the buns if you like, then stack on your favorite toppings.

Pro tip: add an egg

Turkey is leaner than beef, so the patties can crumble on the grill. Adding one egg to the mixture helps bind them together. As a bonus, you get a little extra protein.

A San Diego tip: try French feta

For San Diego locals, I get French feta from North Park Produce on El Cajon Blvd, and it’s a must-try. It’s less salty than Greek feta, and its creamier texture makes these burgers melt in your mouth. That said, any feta works.

Nutrition for this healthy turkey burger recipe

Approximate nutrition per patty, using 93% lean turkey and no bun: about 220 calories, 24 g protein, 13 g fat and 1 g carbohydrate. A brioche bun adds roughly 200 calories and 30 g of carbohydrate, while a lettuce wrap adds almost nothing. Numbers vary by brand, so check your labels or log the recipe in a tracking app for exact figures.

Why choose turkey over beef?

Lean ground turkey is generally lower in saturated fat than regular ground beef while still delivering plenty of protein. Therefore, it’s an easy swap if you’re watching calories or heart health. However, turkey can taste bland on its own. That’s where the feta and basil come in: they add flavor, and fresh herbs bring aroma and nutrients without adding many calories.

For most active adults, getting 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal supports muscle repair and keeps you full. One of these patties gets you right in that range.

What to serve with turkey burgers

  • Baked sweet potato fries for a fiber-rich side
  • A Greek salad with cucumber, tomato, olives and red onion to keep the Mediterranean theme
  • Grilled vegetables such as zucchini, peppers and corn
  • Fresh fruit like watermelon for a light dessert

Also, raise a toast to Dad with his favorite drink, whether that’s a local craft beer, a glass of red wine or a sparkling lemonade.

Make this healthy turkey burger recipe part of your meal prep

This healthy turkey burger recipe is also great for batch cooking. For example, cook a double batch on Sunday, cool the extra patties, and store them in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. Then reheat for quick lunches over a salad or in a wrap. For more ideas, see my meal prep tips and my Costco rotisserie chicken meal prep.
